Jones served as Speaker of the Maryland House of Delegates for six years, becoming the first African American and first woman to hold that position in history. She has been a State Delegate since 1997 and previously served as Speaker Pro Tem under Mike Busch for 16 years before stepping down from leadership in early December 2024. Jones built a career in human relations and fair practices for Baltimore County government, serving there for over 37 years until her retirement in June 2014. She is known for progressive policy wins including increasing funding for historically Black colleges, enshrining abortion rights in the Maryland Constitution, and creating a cabinet-level office of social equity. In February 2025, she withdrew from her reelection bid for District 10 following a medical leave of absence since January 16.
