Members of the Maryland House of Delegates represent their local districts in the state legislature by proposing, debating, and voting on laws that impact public education, healthcare, and transportation. They work alongside the state Senate to pass Maryland’s annual budget and determine how tax dollars are allocated to community services and infrastructure projects. This office is vital because delegates shape the statewide policies and spending priorities that directly influence the daily lives of all residents.
View all candidates in this raceAmar Mukunda is a 32-year-old engineer and entrepreneur from Germantown who announced his candidacy for Maryland's District 39 in November 2025 after originally filing for House of Delegates. He previously worked as Assistant Director at Roca Baltimore, a gun violence prevention nonprofit, from 2019 to 2023 during a period when overdose deaths were skyrocketing. Mukunda earned his Bachelor's degree in Computer Science from Amherst College, completed a Fulbright research grant in machine learning, and received his Master's in Energy and Infrastructure Engineering from Stanford. His parents are immigrants from Pakistan and India who ran an entrepreneurial business that went bankrupt when he was nine years old. He served as a combat engineer in the U.S. Army Reserve and values faith, family, and fortitude above all else.

External news sources report that Mukunda originally registered to run as a delegate for District 39 but dropped out shortly before filing for state Senate instead to challenge incumbent Senator Nancy King.
