Born in working-class Brooklyn in 1957, he studied medicine at Johns Hopkins University where he lived in a one-room apartment while working nights and weekends as a blood bank technician to pay tuition. A Naval Reserve veteran who reached the rank of Commander during Operation Desert Shield/Storm, Harris has served over 16 years in the Medical Corps before transitioning to public service. He is currently Chairman of the House Freedom Caucus and serves on the Appropriations Committee along with subcommittees for Agriculture and Labor/HHS/Education. As a father of five children and grandfather of fourteen, he describes himself as committed to serving his neighbors, country, and community while maintaining fiscal responsibility in Washington.
