On February 5, 2026, Sen. Arthur Ellis left the Senate floor in protest after demanding that leadership allow a vote on a congressional redistricting bill stalled in committee. Speaking during Black History Month observances, Ellis said he would continue protesting for the remainder of the legislative session by boycotting floor activity until House Bill 488 is released from the Rules Committee. Senate President Bill Ferguson assigned the bill to the Rules Committee and declined to say it was dead on arrival but indicated the chamber was not prioritizing the proposal.
