State Senator · Legislative District 46 · Maryland · 2026 Primary
Maryland State Senators represent their local districts in the General Assembly, where they propose and vote on laws covering issues like education, transportation, and public safety. This office is critical because its decisions determine how state tax dollars are spent and which policies govern your local community.
View all candidates in this raceBill Ferguson is serving his third term as Maryland State Senator for the 46th Legislative District and was unanimously elected President of the Maryland Senate in January 2020, becoming the second youngest Senate President in state history. A lifelong Maryland resident who made Baltimore City his home after joining Teach for America, he taught U.S. History and Government to ninth and tenth graders before entering politics. His trajectory changed when he attended an information session about Teach for America and America's achievement gap relative to a child's zip code, leading him away from Wall Street toward public service. He beat a 27-year incumbent in the 2010 Primary Election to become Maryland's youngest ever State Senator, joining the General Assembly in January 2011. Since becoming Senate President, he has shepherded an ambitious agenda including the Blueprint for Maryland's Future, historic police reform legislation, investment in Historically Black Colleges and Universities, and over $1 billion in state economic stimulus through the COVID-19 crisis.
