U.S. Representative · Congressional District 5 · Maryland · 2026 Primary
A U.S. Representative serves as your district's voice in Congress, where they vote on federal laws, national budgets, and policies that impact daily life. They are responsible for securing federal funding for local infrastructure and helping residents resolve issues with federal agencies, such as the Social Security Administration or the Department of Veterans Affairs. This office matters because it ensures your community’s specific needs and priorities are represented in the national government.
View all candidates in this raceDave Sundberg is a former senior FBI official and United States Air Force veteran running for U.S. Representative in Maryland's 5th Congressional District, seeking to replace retiring Democratic Rep. Steny Hoyer. Raised by an engineering professor father and community leader, Sundberg served in the Air Force before transitioning to local law enforcement as a Dover Police detective and joining the FBI shortly after 9/11. During his 23-year career at the Bureau, he commanded the elite Hostage Rescue Team and led the Washington Field Office, where he oversaw investigations into the January 6th Capitol attack and classified document retention efforts. Following the 2025 presidential inauguration, Sundberg was fired from the FBI by the Trump administration as part of a purge targeting officials who opposed partisan weaponization of government agencies. He announced his candidacy to defend the Constitution and ensure accountability, stating he is running because he believes in 'the rule of law, not the rule of one man.'

NBC News reports that Sundberg was pushed out of the FBI soon after President Donald Trump took office in late January 2025. He joined the FBI in 2002 and served as assistant director in charge of its Washington field office during the Biden administration before being notified he would lose his job among a number of firings of top officials at the beginning of Trump's second term. Sundberg is running for the seat vacated by Hoyer, which covers southern Maryland and portions of Prince George's and Anne Arundel counties, in what Cook Political Report rates as a solid Democratic seat.
