Born and raised in Harlem, New York from humble immigrant beginnings, she lost her mother at age four and father when she was eight, being raised by her maternal grandmother who taught her the value of hard work. She earned a BA from Barnard College and an MS from University of Utah in chemistry before earning dual master's degrees in public affairs and urban regional planning from Princeton University. During her tenure on County Council, she increased county revenues from $3.3 billion to $4.6 billion, put 18 new schools in the pipeline for construction including nine in District 2 alone, and worked seven years to revamp zoning ordinance culminating in a Countywide Map Amendment. She is described as a passionate advocate for social justice issues seeking to improve lives of working families and diverse communities with over 15 years experience as policy analyst within local, state and federal government.

According to Conduit Street coverage from July 20, 2022, Council Member Deni Taveras holds a decisive lead in a multi-way primary for District 47B House of Delegates seat. As of Wednesday morning, unofficial tallied vote counts showed Taveras ahead with 57.22 percent versus Marlin Jenkins at 40.31 percent, with a third candidate Jorge Sactic securing 2.47 percent. The seat was vacated by Delegate Wanika Fisher who ran for County Council District 2 and is slightly ahead in that primary race.
