The Sheriff is an elected official responsible for maintaining courthouse security, serving legal documents such as warrants and evictions, and transporting individuals in custody. In many Maryland counties, the Sheriff’s Office also serves as the primary law enforcement agency, conducting patrols and investigating crimes. This office is a key part of the local justice system, ensuring that court orders are enforced and the public is protected.
View all candidates in this raceEverett Sesker is a law enforcement veteran and former Executive Director of the Maryland Police Training and Standards Commission who was elected Sheriff of Anne Arundel County in 2022. A proud son of the county raised in Edgewater, he graduated from South River High School and Winthrop University as a first-generation college graduate before serving 22 years with the Prince George's County Police Department where he retired as a Major. Upon returning to Anne Arundel County, he took office committed to modernizing equipment, reducing agency vacancy rates to zero, and establishing new civilian roles to support sworn personnel. His administration has focused on community engagement through events like Purple Light Night and strengthening partnerships with outside agencies while implementing internal reforms such as the Office of Professional Compliance and a drone program. He is currently seeking re-election in 2026.
