Members of the Maryland House of Delegates represent their local districts in the state legislature by proposing, debating, and voting on laws that impact public education, healthcare, and transportation. They work alongside the state Senate to pass Maryland’s annual budget and determine how tax dollars are allocated to community services and infrastructure projects. This office is vital because delegates shape the statewide policies and spending priorities that directly influence the daily lives of all residents.

A native of Savannah, Georgia, he moved to Amityville, New York at age 12 where he studied political science and criminal justice at Tuskegee University before beginning his career in law enforcement. He worked for the Suffolk County Board of Elections, Probation Office, and United States Attorney's Office before relocating to Maryland in 2006. Simmons served as a Special Police Officer with the Department of Defense at Bolling Air Force Base and Andrews Air Force base, retiring in 2017 after also working as a temporary staff assistant at Lindale Middle School. His three key areas of focus are Education, Environment, and local Economy. He currently serves on multiple legislative subcommittees including Family and Juvenile Law, Criminal Law and Procedure, and Judiciary Committee.

I wanted to be your Delegate because you don't throw away a second chance.
North County has been left behind too often when big decisions have been made and I want to make sure that our community has a seat at the table.
As a parent, I will fight to ensure every student gets the schooling that they deserve by investing in our schools and educators to make sure that every child goes to a school that is ready to provide the education.
Maryland is defined by the Chesapeake Bay. And with the ongoing Climate Crisis, we cannot delay action to preserve our most treasured asset and to protect ourselves from environmental disaster.

A March 2026 Maryland Matters article reports that Delegate Gary Simmons filed a lawsuit challenging the residency eligibility of his primary opponent, John Dove. An Anne Arundel County Circuit Court judge dismissed Simmons' initial challenge, but he is now asking the Supreme Court of Maryland to overturn that ruling. The case involves whether Dove can remain on the ballot despite apparently not meeting current residency requirements.
