House of Delegates Member · Legislative District 36 · Maryland · 2026 Primary
Members of the Maryland House of Delegates represent their local districts in the state legislature by proposing, debating, and voting on laws that impact public education, healthcare, and transportation. They work alongside the state Senate to pass Maryland’s annual budget and determine how tax dollars are allocated to community services and infrastructure projects. This office is vital because delegates shape the statewide policies and spending priorities that directly influence the daily lives of all residents.
View all candidates in this raceJeff Ghrist is a member of the Maryland House of Delegates representing District 36. He serves on the House Appropriations Committee, where he has worked on legislation such as HB902 to expand childcare access and reduce capital costs for school construction. Ghrist is a vocal advocate for the private sector, emphasizing its role in funding public services and expressing concern over job growth that is disproportionately concentrated in government and warehousing. He maintains strong ties to the agricultural community, supporting local Eastern Shore farmers and drawing on his own background working on farms. Additionally, he facilitates constituent engagement through legislative scholarships and regional networking events in Annapolis.
Today HB902 crossed the finish line. It is a bill that will expand childcare access and save our schools and counties hundreds of millions in school construction capital costs.
When the president or anyone talks about job growth take a look at where it is. Government, transportation (FedEx/UPS) and warehousing (Amazon). The rest of the private sector has shown declining employment even after COVID. This isn’t good. The private sector is what funds the public sector.
I want to give a shout out for [Abby Diehl] because she owns a retail produce company in Anne Arundel County and buys much of her inventory from our Eastern Shore farmers.
Last call for District 36 students to apply for a House of Delegates Scholarship for the 2024-2025 school year from my office!
