County Commissioner · Washington County · 2026 Primary
County Commissioners act as both the lawmaking body and the executive branch for their county, meaning they pass local ordinances and oversee all county departments. They are responsible for setting property tax rates and adopting the annual budget, which determines funding levels for essential services like public schools, road maintenance, and emergency responders. Their decisions on land use and zoning also directly influence how your community grows and what types of businesses or housing can be built.
View all candidates in this raceJonathan Fish is a 37-year-old candidate for Washington County Commissioner, bringing a background as a senior lead computer programmer and a former high school chemistry teacher. He holds a Bachelor's in Political Science from the University of Florida and characterizes his approach to governance as both idealized and pragmatic. Fish's platform is centered on addressing the cost of living by prioritizing affordable housing, food security, and livable wages. He advocates for viewing the county as an interconnected ecosystem, where improvements in infrastructure, education, and social services benefit the community as a whole. Fish emphasizes a service-oriented leadership style, pledging to manage the county budget with care and to make decisions that avoid unfairly benefiting or punishing specific groups.
I think with current projected growth we are coming to some critical decisions about what our county’s priorities and goals should be and I have not seen a lot of evidence that those who are currently in office will make those decisions with the best interest of everyone in our community in mind.
The root of my beliefs, objectives, and actions is that humans are born equal and have the right to have their basic needs met.
I will not consider any actions that unfairly benefit or punish a particular group within the community. Nor will I side with any company or organization in an action I feel is detrimental to their workers or may have negative consequences to our shared natural resources.
I am an employee of the people and intend to listen to everyone who has something to say and be open to all constructive ideas.
I intend to treat the budget with the utmost care and focus on making each dollar have the maximum impact.
