County Council Members serve as the legislative branch of county government, passing local laws and approving the annual budget that funds public schools, roads, and emergency services. They set local tax rates and make final decisions on land use and zoning, which determines where new homes and businesses can be built. This office is responsible for prioritizing how your tax dollars are spent and managing the long-term growth and infrastructure of your community.

A father, Marine combat veteran, and journalist, Detmer grew up in Dorchester County and chose to raise his family there. He has served on the County Council since December 6, 2022 and currently serves as Vice President of the Council, as well as a member of the Dorchester County Board of Health. As a journalist, he has worked for Adams Publishing Group, publishers of the Star Democrat and the Dorchester Star. His platform for re-election focuses on three priorities: keeping citizens safe by supporting law enforcement and incentivizing volunteer firefighters, restoring effective county government, and preparing Dorchester County for future development opportunities and challenges. He will face a Democratic challenger in the November 3, 2026 general election.

Keeping citizens safe is the top priority for any government. It's more than just competitive pay and the right kind of training and equipment.
County government needs to be more effective immediately, including hiring the county manager job that has been vacant since 2020 and instituting transparency.
