A lifelong Eastern Shore resident, he spent 22 years as a Maryland State Trooper, retiring as a sergeant in 2006, before being elected sheriff that same November. He pioneered a drug interdiction program along the U.S. Route 13 corridor and served as a certified master instructor through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Maryland Police Training Commission. He served as President of the Maryland Sheriffs' Association from 2012 to 2013. During his tenure, Lewis has become a nationally recognized and outspoken figure in conservative law enforcement circles, making frequent appearances on Fox News and at political events. He is a strong supporter of Second Amendment rights and gained national attention for his "We Will Not Comply" declaration regarding Maryland gun control legislation. He has also been the subject of a published biography titled "Sheriff Mike Lewis: Constitutional. Uncanceled." In 2026 he faces his first contested election in 20 years, challenged by Scott Hamilton. The Republican primary is June 23, 2026.
Scott W. Hamilton has announced his candidacy for sheriff of Wicomico County, challenging incumbent Sheriff Mike Lewis who is seeking re-election. In his campaign announcement, Hamilton cited his "more than two decades of local law enforcement experience and over 22 years of distinguished military service." Sheriff Mike Lewis announced on Facebook on Feb. 12 that he will be running for re-election this year.
