She lives in Wheaton with her husband and children. As Councilmember, she has been a champion on economic development, housing policy, veterans' issues, environment, health, public safety, transportation, education, and arts advocacy. A former Planning Board member who resigned in 2021 to run for County Council, she requested an update of the Forest Conservation Law while on that board before voting on it as a Councilmember in 2023. She uses public financing and was close to receiving matching funds in her January 2026 campaign finance report.

Bethesda Magazine reports that Fani-González will face at least one challenger in the Democratic primary election this June after Sonia Garcia, a cancer biologist from Wheaton who lost her job at NIH last year, filed as a Democratic candidate. Montgomery Perspective notes she is currently council president running for a second term and was one of the strongest district candidates in public financing in the 2022 cycle. The only district-level council seat where an incumbent remains unopposed is District 2, represented by Vice President Marilyn Balcombe.
