A Democrat, Travers has served on the County Council since September 6, 2005, making him one of the longest-serving council members in Dorchester County history. During his tenure he has served as President of the Council from December 2014 to December 2018 and again during the current term, and has been a member of the Board of Estimates, the Board of Health, the Board of Liquor License Commissioners, and the Roads Board. He is also a member of the Cambridge Main Street Committee. He will face Republican challenger Grady Wilson in the November 3, 2026 general election.

Planning & Zoning Director Susan Webb told the Council that higher fine levels were intended to align local penalties with State standards. Several residents spoke in opposition to aspects of the changes during the meeting.
