The Sheriff is an elected official responsible for maintaining courthouse security, serving legal documents such as warrants and evictions, and transporting individuals in custody. In many Maryland counties, the Sheriff’s Office also serves as the primary law enforcement agency, conducting patrols and investigating crimes. This office is a key part of the local justice system, ensuring that court orders are enforced and the public is protected.

Born and raised in Huntingtown on a tobacco farm, Cox graduated from Calvert High School and went on to complete boot camp at Parris Island, South Carolina, earning the distinction of United States Marine in 2000. After being honorably discharged in 2004, he joined the Calvert County Sheriff's Office as a Deputy Sheriff and rose through the ranks over 18 years, serving in every bureau of the department and earning numerous honors including Rookie of the Year, State Deputy of the Year twice, and two medals for valor. He was first elected Sheriff in November 2022 and has served since December 20, 2022. During his tenure he has served on the Drug and Alcohol Advisory Board and has been an outspoken advocate for maintaining local law enforcement cooperation with federal immigration authorities. He and his wife Susie, a Calvert County schoolteacher, are raising their three children in the county.
