Members of the Board of Education oversee the local public school system by setting educational policies, approving the annual operating budget, and hiring the superintendent. They make key decisions on matters such as student curriculum, school boundaries, and the maintenance of school facilities. This office is important because its members determine how tax dollars are spent to support student learning and the overall quality of schools in the community.
View all candidates in this raceSamichie K. Thomas is an incumbent member of the Charles County Board of Education representing District 1, seeking election to a full term in 2026. A Hughesville resident and parent of four students in Charles County Public Schools since 2006, she holds a Bachelor of Social Work with a minor in education and a Master of Science in Human Resources Management and Development, both from Bowie State University. She has over 20 years of experience in human resources, including work as an HR Specialist at NASA and currently serving as a Consulting Director for HR Information Systems at a private sector software company supporting business development. She first ran for the District 1 seat in 2022, finishing third behind winners Cindy Coulby and David Hancock. When Coulby resigned in January 2023 after attending just one meeting, Thomas applied for the vacancy and was selected by the board in October 2023 to complete the remainder of the term through December 2026. She received endorsements from both the Education Association of Charles County and AFSCME during her 2022 campaign. In January 2026, her fellow board members elected her as vice chairperson. She chairs the board's strategic planning committee and serves on the finance committee, and participates in the Charles County Chamber of Commerce's business and education committee. Her priorities center on student academic achievement, workforce support, and community engagement.
